"But Mom!" I whined, aggravated.

It was six o'clock in the morning, and I had to get ready for summer camp. For the record, I absolutely HATE waking up early. It was summer, and I was supposed to be enjoying myself, not getting out of bed before the sun!

"Don't you 'But Mom' me," my mother snapped back, coldly.

We went through this EVERY year. I didn't really understand the point of summer camp. Summer is supposed to be relaxing, peaceful, and a getaway from school and work... not annoying!

The camp I went to was called "Camp RockStar." Yeah, I'm a musician, but I don't like to be forced to write music or come up with a tune out of nowhere. I think of music on my own time, not with some silly counselors.

So my bags were packed and we headed to Minnesota. It was a three-hour drive, which was the worst. Me and Mom never talked, so I just blasted my music, played Fruit Ninja on my iPhone, and texted my friends the whole way there.

After three painful hours of sitting in a cramped car, we finally arrived. I saw some of my friends, Julie and Tara, and skipped right up to them. We put our bags in our cabin and started walking and catching up as my mother waved farewell.

Then we bumped into the leader of the camp, Hyper Harry.

"Hey! How have you girls been?" Harry asked loudly, twitching from that weird extra energy he always had.

"Goo--" I started to say, and was interrupted before I could even finish.

“Hey,” interjected Harry, "will you girls do me a huge favor and go up to the forest and get some wood?” Harry picked up four big wood bags and handed them to us. “Were gonna have a welcoming campfire!" he squealed enthusiastically, jumping up and down. That man didn’t get the name “Hyper Harry” for nothing. We took the bags and walked towards the woods. When someone is that weird, you just kind of have to do what they say.

The beautiful sun was setting right on the lake. The clear blue skies were turning dull and grey. There was a hint of pink and orange outlining the sunset. Oh, how I loved the summertime! Though I loved it more in my house instead of at camp.

It was starting to get dark, and we wanted to go and get back as soon as possible.

“Hey,” I said, spotting a clump of fallen-down trees a few yards away, “There’s some wood for us up ahead. Let’s go through there.”

Julie and Tara nodded and followed along, catching me up on the hot new gossip of camp this year.

Suddenly, we heard the “Crack!” of someone stepping on a twig.

"Was that you?" I asked the girls.

"No!" Julie and Tara said in unison.

"Was that YOU?" Julie asked me.

"Nope!" I said.

"Then, wha-wha-what could it have b-b-been?" Tara asked, stuttering with fright. She was such a scaredy cat.

"Maybe it was a bear or a werewolf coming to eat us alive!" I shrieked, jokingly.

"That's NOT funny!” Tara said. “What if it really was?" She could never take a joke. She was afraid of everything!

We heard another twig snap. We looked in the direction of the sound.

"Do any of you have your phones?" Julie asked us.

"No! I left mine in my suitcase!" I gasped.

"Well ya don't have to yell!" Tara said. I hadn’t realized my voice was so loud.

Then we heard a huge growl.

"I’m sorry, but there's a bear-- or something!-- trying to eat us, and we have no communication devices!" I screamed.

Then we heard the beast stomp down on more twigs and leaves, and saw a dark shape crawling its way towards us.

Would this be the end?

Frozen in fear, we stood there. Unable to move, unable to breathe, unable to even think. I watched as a big, huge, black......dog stepped from out of the shadows. I finally let my lungs breathe again and looked over to see that Tara started crying. The dog trotted towards us and jumped on Tara. She squealed and pushed it off.

"Were ...
